Located amongst a small settlement of baches near the beach on the Tawharanui Peninsula, the Takatu House nestles into the base of a bush covered hill overlooking farmland. The spaces are divided by function, with living and sleeping pavilions housed under separate gable forms in a subtle reference to rural farm building vernacular. The bach replaces a tired and outgrown cottage with a nostalgic nod to the original dwellings ‘pioneer red’ colour, which provides a striking contrast to the green hillside it sits upon.
