It’s that time of year again: the New Zealand Institute of Architects Local Architecture Awards have started to be announced. Here’s a look at the winning houses in the Wellington and Canterbury regions.

Wellington

In Wellington, the housing category winners ran the gamut from a small in size, big on intent tiny home of around 30m2 by Bonnifait+Giesen Architects, to Seaborne, a multi-unit townhouse development on the Petone foreshore. There was even a winner from the Chatham Islands — Kelp, a sculptural house by Bull O’Sullivan Architecture was included and named a Housing category winner, because consenting for the island is executed by Wellington City Council.

Canterbury

Further south, some unusual residences took out awards in Canterbury, including Apartment 41, a retail site and home created by MC Architecture Studio and a winner in the Commercial category; Dorset St Flats, a sensitive and beautiful refurbishment of mid-century townhouses, by Young Architects; Biv, a small home in Punakaiki by Fabric; and RTA Studio’s Z House, a quirky, bespoke home full of gorgeous details that garnered a Housing win.
