Herbst Architects was established in 2001 by Lance and Nicola Herbst.
Since inception, the practice has completed buildings in a wide range of typologies, including commercial, educational, multi residential, and hospitality. The studio has progressively become well-known for its work in the field of architect designed houses, particularly baches and beach houses.
In addition to the full architect service provided in Aotearoa New Zealand, the practice provides design architect services for houses internationally and has executed a number of projects in Australia, USA, and South America.
The works of the practice have been widely published, both locally and internationally, and have been the recipients of numerous awards for architecture, notably 38 New Zealand Institute of Architects awards and the winner of Home of the Year in 2012, 2016, and 2018. The practice has twice received the prestigious NZIA Sir Ian Athfield Award for Housing, in 2018 and 2023.
