Gloria Cabral named international judge for Home of the Year 2019

Leading South American Architect Gloria Cabral will be joining the judging panel for Home of the Year 2019

In conversation with Gloria Cabral

HOME and Altherm Window Systems are delighted to announce Gloria Cabral, one of South America’s leading architects, as our international judge on Home of the Year 2019. Cabral is well known for her regional architecture and the work of her firm Gabinete de Arquitectura.

Cabral was recently awarded the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture at the Women in Architecture Awards; in 2016 she won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.

From her studio in Asunción, Paraguay, she designs buildings that are both rough and polished. They are always built from brick – she once said that in her country, a kilogram of bricks is cheaper than a kilogram of tomatoes. “If tomatoes were cheaper than bricks,” she joked, “then I would build from tomatoes.”

Her buildings are shadowy and almost monumental. There’s a hand-crafted textural feel to them, an otherworldly combination of earthy brick and breathtaking imagination. Arches, curves and parabolas all feature, whether it’s a home in the city or a therapy centre for children with special needs.
