Home of the Year finalist Garden Wall House by Vaughn McQuarrie

This Dunedin home emerges as a blend of history, nature, and contemporary design. Situated on a site that once formed part of castle grounds, the project draws inspiration from its surroundings, including the remnants of a garden wall that were uncovered during site visits.

“These historical elements helped guide the design,” architect Vaughn McQuarrie explains. “The most striking feature of the house is the recreation of the brick garden walls, which now form an integral part of the home’s structure. These walls are not just a visual connection to the past but also define the spatial experience of the house, weaving together the old and new. The mature vegetation, a legacy of the site’s former garden, has been carefully preserved and interwoven into the home’s layout, creating an organic flow between the interior and the landscape.

“This project celebrates the architectural legacy of its setting and creates a timeless, functional space that speaks to the client’s needs and the landscape’s story.”

Garden Wall House is currently for sale through Bayleys Dunedin. Agents Craig Palmer and Alice Munro describe the home as an embodiment of the art of living … “where every element is designed to offer beauty, comfort, and a sense of refined elegance”.
