Maximalist marble

Calacatta Viola Marble takes vivid to a new level; thick, flowing veins of rich burgundy are set against refined grey and white tones. It’s a classic testament to the powerful beauty of natural stone.

The decision to use Viola marble in burgundy this New Plymouth home came about early on in the design process; it was something both designer Annika Rowson and her client were set on. “Viola was always at the forefront of the design. The client was a big fan of natural stone so we went to CDK Stone to view the options,” Annika tells us.

“It’s something I always recommend we do because each slab is so unique. Being able to view the stone in person is really special. You walk in and it’s like viewing art on a grand scale — you’re surrounded by this beautiful material, with slabs up to three metres wide. It’s also a completely different experience seeing natural stone in person. It’s an important part of the process because photographs can’t depict the exact intricacies of colour and depth.”

“Often, we end up at CDK with a certain stone in mind, and by wandering around, something else might catch our eye and we end up going in a different direction, so it’s always a really rewarding experience that can change the tone of a design. I always encourage clients to consider stone selection early in the design process, not just for this reason but to also secure the slabs required for the project as stock availability changes frequently.”

By using the same stone in the kitchen, powder room, and ensuite, this home was given a sense of cohesion — moments of luxuriousness in a setting of playful and elegant character.

“It’s such a versatile and timeless marble. The rich veining and tones are beautiful in a range of settings, both on a grander scale such as in the kitchen where it really defines the space, and as more concise features, such as a vanity or coffee table.”

The powder room is a compact space yet the marble doesn’t feel overwhelming; rather, a perfectly fitting sculptural gesture. Likewise, in the main ensuite, it presents a visual focus and a sumptuous tactility without taking away from the otherwise predominantly neutral tonal palette.

Calacatta Viola Marble is one of CDK Stone’s most sought-after statement marbles for projects where a sense of chic luxury is desired.

Suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, walls, flooring, and outdoor areas, it is a versatile, hard wearing stone that makes a statement in any setting.
