Tactile beauty

Design workshop Powersurge has opened an immersive brick and mortar showroom at Auckland’s stunning new architectural destination, Residium. We caught up with the duo behind the new space, Hugh McKellar of Residium and Powersurge’s Andrea Harradine, to find out more about the creative partnership.

Incorporating spaces from Australasia’s top architectural brands, Residium takes the concept of a showroom into the future. It’s an incredible space, where innovation is at the fore — something to which Powersurge is no stranger, with its ever-evolving collection of bespoke artisanal metal products.

“Residium is more than just a showroom or a showcase for ideas — it’s a vital community hub for the building and design sectors,” Hugh tells us of the destination, which will host a regular programme of events, workshops, and talks, all of which will be open to the public.

“Powersurge is a prime example of a brand that we are immensely proud to host at Residium. [These artisans are] legendary in the New Zealand building and design industry,” he says.

Since launching its specialist Home Collection in 2018, Powersurge has become renowned for its artisan lighting, mirrors, and handles, all of which are now on display at Residium, in the prominent brass-clad display gracing the venue’s entrance.

“We jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with Residium and share their vision to push the boundaries of architecture and design,” Andrea says. “The small team of artisans, led by Powersurge co-director Todd Stevenson, has created a space at Residium that reflects the incredible values of the Home Collection — it is minimal, elegant, and meticulous.”

It’s a first for Powersurge, which until now has operated from an artisan workshop without a retail presence.

“Residium offers our clients a chance to handle these incredible objects in person — they’re handmade creations that are best understood through touch,” Andrea explains.

That’s exactly what Residium is all about: the chance to encounter specialist brands such as Powersurge in a curated setting that allows a personalised experience. “Here, visitors can take their time to consider their choices in a beautifully designed and relaxed environment without feeling pressured,” Hugh says. “It’s a unique blend of community, innovation, and design; a one-of-a-kind showroom.”
