Tranquil restraint

This finely tuned pavilion on Kawau Island by Novak+Middleton balances strength and serenity in equal measure. At once subtle and bold, it is defined by honest materials and natural textures. Using a refined selection of Resene finishes, the home is further tied to its unique location, nestled among a kānuka forest.

Inside, the exposed beams are coated in Resene Woodsman Shadow Match — black, with a shadow of brown. Colour is used with both restraint and confidence. Sliding doors separating the living area from the bedroom wings are painted in Resene Clementine Orange — a joyful burst of citrus energy that catches the afternoon light and brings a spirited warmth to the interior.

In the bedrooms, Resene Crisp Green creates restful retreats, subtly shifting with the natural light to evoke the lush, layered greens of the surrounding bush. Framing the views, the joinery is finished in Resene Ironsand, its smokey brown-grey tone grounding the structure. Together, the nuanced use of colour and texture presents a reflection of the island’s enduring tranquillity.
