On the cover of the latest issue is the remarkable courtyard home of academic and architect Ross Jenner. Ross and his wife Chris built the home in 1985 on a tiny, rear site in Remuera next to Ross’s parents. Together, the two houses form a thoughtful, highly rationalised compound that still seems relevant today.

At first blush it doesn’t seem at all like a New Zealand house – it has white plaster, courtyards and high walls. It’s highly rationalised and deeply modernist with a European sensibility that still seems to fit Auckland beautifully.

The courtyards offer shelter from rain, wind and neighbours on the northern side. They give the houses a sense of composure and elegance and they show that this house still has much to offer us in 2017.
