HOME in five with Clare Chapman

HOME’s editor-in-chief, Clare Chapman, is mother to Emma and Toby and a coffee addict. She’s busier than ever during lockdown. We put five questions to Clare, including how she’s surviving without her regular flat whites.

What’s the best part of your view from home?

My garden, unless it’s deadline week for HOME because at that stage it’s more likely to resemble a jungle.

Zoom apparel. Covid jab bruise. Unfinished reno.

What are you reading?

False River by Kiwi author Paula Morris – a collection of her short stories. Well worth a read.

What are you watching?

I’ve just finished the series The Beautiful Lie.

Emma and Hope and their home-made masks on the eve of lockdown L4, 2020.

What are you cooking and/or baking?

I’ve been ushered out of the kitchen by my eleven-year-old Emma. She’s a great little cook. So far, we’ve been treated with many delights including oreo cake, potato and spinach mash with chicken, and a host of other concoctions. (She did manage to start a small fire with a rogue piece of baking paper on the first night of lockdown but we swiftly dealt with that and nobody was hurt, so we won’t mention that will we Bemmie?!)

Skis, a telescope and half the house. Toby’s lockdown hut/the lounge.

What’s inspiring you right now?

My children, Emma and Toby, and the amazing people in our little bubble who are a constant source of laughter and support.

Bonus question: How are you surviving without your regular flat whites?

Not well! The loss of my half-strength daily flat whites is huge. The swirling grains of instant coffee just don’t do the trick.
