Calling all designers: HOME and Fisher & Paykel are looking for the country’s best new design for the 2018 Design Awards

Calling all designers! HOME is seeking entries for 2018 Design Awards

Our annual awards celebrate new and innovative design across furniture, textiles, ceramics and lighting – clever pieces that go in or around the home.

Judged by HOME editor Simon Farrell-Green and Fisher & Paykel general manager of design Mark Elmore, the awards are open to New Zealand designers, both established and new, along with artists, whose designs are intended for sale. The winner will receive $3000 in Fisher & Paykel products.

We are interested in designs that solve problems, both new and familiar, with elegance and simplicity. The awards will be judged in August and announced in our October/November issue.

2017 Design Awards: ‘Newton’ espresso

By Hayden Maunsell and Alan Neilson

What started as a conversation between a designer and engineer has resulted in a stripped-back, sculptural manual coffee press developed with the New Zealand home and bach in mind. Former mechanical engineer turned designer, 31-year-old Hawke’s Bay-based Hayden Maunsell worked with Alan Neilson, a toolmaker by trade, craftsman and engineer, to support his passion for coffee and express his desire for quality design.

2015 Design Awards: ‘Torchon’ pendant light

By Cheshire Architects

The winner of HOME’s Design Awards 2015 was the ‘Torchon’ pendant light by Cheshire Architects. Designed by Nat Cheshire and Emily Priest, it was made in a fiery, innovative rush by glass artist Luke Jacomb in an unassuming little shed in west Auckland.

Fisher & Paykel’s design director Mark Elmore described the ‘Torchon’ pendant as “an amazing fusion of design, technology and craft. I think the way they’ve taken a very simple pure spherical shape in glass and inserted that very organic craft-based natural form inside that…is an amazing piece of design.” You can see this amazing process in our short web film above.
