A compact concrete home by Maguire and Harford Architects gets back to basics

Small, tough and described by the Home of the Year judges as somewhat monastic, the winner of Best Small Home is the perfect example of only building what you need. Set on a steep site in Cashmere, Christchurch, the H01 House, by Braden Harford, fits a lot of drama into its 85-square-metre frame.

The third finalist in Home of the Year 2018 is a wonderful response to a rear infill site in Miramar, Wellington. Sitting down a very steep driveway, the Miramar House by Andrew Sexton manages to achieve a sense of privacy despite surrounded by neighbours.

The second Home of the Year finalist is a house of high drama – with the polished black floors, black timber ceiling and striking furniture and finishes sourced from Asia. “You get this meeting of interiors and architecture, which is not something we always see in New Zealand to this level,” says HOME Editor Simon Farrell-Green.
